  7. music, pictures, diagrams and a powerful easy-to-use GUI. Previously
  8. Titanic II was released commercially as Licenceware, but is now FREEWARE!

  10. Note: Titanic II was voted PD Utility of the month for June 1997 by Amiga
  11. Computing, two years after its release! In March 1999 is was also on the 
  12. Amiga Format CD, number 37, along with Tutankhamun. Winning the reader 
  13. contribution for that month.

  57. Titanic II was once sold commercially by the Central Licenceware Registry,
  58. but after this company had ceased trading, Titanic II became unavailable
  59. through any outlet. Around this time i was pursueing a degree in Computers
  60. and was forced to sell my Amiga to raise money for a PC, an action i later
  61. regretted. Deprived of my Amiga i lost track of the Amiga scene for nearly
  62. three years.

  64. The degree is now finished, and as a reward to myself i bought a new Amiga.
  65. After catching up on the Amiga scene, i was shocked by the amount of
  66. software and hardware companys that had abandoned the Amiga, a computer that
  67. had been so good to them in the past!

  69. I now wish to help the Amiga in any way i can, for this reason Titanic II
  70. is now released as FREEWARE. Please ignore any copyright messages in the
  71. program itself.

  100. WHAT IS TITANIC II?
  101. ===================
  102.  
  103. Titanic II is an interactive exploration of one of the greatest maritime
  104. disasters of all time. The disaster occurred on April 14, 1912, when the
  105. Royal Mail Ship Titanic, on her maiden voyage, brushed an iceberg and took
  106. 1,500 souls to their deaths in freezing water. The program not only covers
  107. that fateful night, but also the reasons she was built, the reaction to the
  108. disaster and finally the discovery of the wreck.
  109.  
  110. Titanic II will be of great interest to students studying Maritime history
  111. or for those simply interested in Titanic. Full instructions for operating
  112. the program can be found within Titanic II.

  116. PROGRAM REQUIREMENTS
  117. ====================
  118.  
  119. Titanic II will work on any Amiga which has at least 1MB of chip memory
  120. and OS 2.0 or later installed, the program will also make use of an
  121. external floppy drive if available. Titanic II can be installed to Hard
  122. Disk, see below.

  126. INSTALLING TO FLOPPY
  127. ====================
  128.  
  129. You will need two floppy disks, format both disks and name them `Titanic1'
  130. and `Titanic2' respectively. Titanic1 should be made bootable by using
  131. `install df0:' from a shell or CLI.
  132.  
  133. Un-archive the contents of the file Titanic1.lha, copy all the files to the 
  134. Titanic1 disk, execluding the source and pics directorys. Copy the pics
  135. directory to the Titanic2 disk. You should then have a working copy of
  136. Titanic II on floppy.

  140. INSTALLING TO HARD DISK
  141. =======================
  142.  
  143. Simply unarchive and drag the Titanic II directory anywhere on your Hard 
  144. Disk. If you have the original floppy version you can run the HDInstall 
  145. program on disk 1 or you may do it manually. If the manual method is used 
  146. the following should be noted: 
  147.  
  148. Titanic II finds all its files by reading in the Titanics.prefs from the
  149. current System disk (be it floppy or Hard Disk), if this file is not
  150. found Titanic II uses its defaults, consequently it will not know where to
  151. find its files and the program will abort. Getting around this problem you
  152. can do the following.
  153.  
  154. First load the TitanicII.prefs into a text editor such as Ed. Looking at 
  155. the file you will see that the first three lines contain the paths of
  156. Titanic's three directorys:
  157.  
  158.                              Titanic1:Music/
  159.                              Titanic2:Pics/
  160.                              Titanic1:Data/
  161.  
  162. So if you had installed Titanic II to a partition called Work and into a 
  163. directory called Test, you should edit the file to read:
  164.    
  165.                              Work:Test/Music/
  166.                              Work:Test/Pics/
  167.                              Work:Test/Data/
  168.  
  169. Also if you wish to throw all Titanic's files into one directory say for 
  170. instance Test2, you should edit the file to read:

  176. Once you have finished editing the file you should save it to your Sys/S 
  177. directory, and when you next run Titanic II it will hopefully find it's
  178. files from the paths you have given it.

  180. You should also copy the Diskfont.library and Titanic fonts, found on 
  181. Titanic disk 1, to your Libs and Fonts directorys.

  185. THE FUTURE

  188. I still have the original source to Titanic II and intend to transfer the
  189. program to CD, this will give the freedom to add video, audio and other
  190. goodies to the program.
  191.  
  192. The project will be entitled Titanic III (original!). If you are in any way
  193. interested, and you are a programmer, graphic artist, musician or a person
  194. who would to help in writing text, scanning pictures, producing video, or
  195. can help in any other way, please contact me!!!

  205. Tutankhamun is very much in the same format as Titanic, it too uses text,
  206. diagrams and pictures to convey its information. To get a better idea of
  207. what Tutankhamun is all about the following text is from Tutankhamun's
  208. introduction.

  210. The tomb of Tutankhamun, with its breathtaking treasures has exerted a
  211. unique hold on the popular imagination ever since its discovery in 1922. It
  212. remains the greatest tomb find ever made. The story of the boy king, buried
  213. in splendour at the height of Egyptian civilization, the determined quest
  214. for his tomb by Howard Carter and Lord Carnarvon, the unforeseen riches
  215. eventually revealed, these are the ingredients unparalleled in the history
  216. of archaeology.

  218. Yet for all the publicity at the time of discovery and since, given added
  219. spice by the linking of Carnarvon's early death with the legend of the
  220. pharaoh's curse, it remains a story but partly told. Now, with the help of
  221. the computer, the entire Tutankhamun story can be finally told. From the
  222. search to discovery, from excavation to the exhibations of the 60s and 70s,
  223. here is all the intriguing detail."
